X^2/2 - 8 + x = -8

x^2 - 16 + 2x = -16

x^2 + 2x = 0

x(x + 2) = 0

x = 0 and x + 2 = 0

x = -2

How would I check this problem. I have tried putting the number in place of the x but I can not get it to equal out.( hope I am clear about what I am asking)

I just may not be setting it up right can you show me how it would be set up to equal out

Take the original equation.

Plug "-2" in for the x's.

Simplify the left-hand side.

Compare the result with the right-hand side.

Yes It's Right.

Hello latresa31s:

You posted, "How would I check this problem."

The answer to that question is to substitute your candidates for the solutions to x into the original equation and simplify to see if you end up with a correct statement.

I'll check your first candidate: x = 0.

x^2/2 - 8 + x = -8

(0)^2 - 8 + (0) = -8

0 - 8 + 0 = -8

-8 = -8

It checks.

You try the other candidate, and if you still can't get it to work, show us your work.
