I have a test coming up and whenever I try to do the chain rule I get confused. For example why would a problem like sin(5x) be a chain rule problem? If anyone has any good explanations from distinguising it or hints to determine what type of problems are chain rules i would be very appreciative. Thank you.

Try to write sin(5x) as a composition of functions.

For example: if f(x)=sin(x) and g(x)=5x, then sin(5x) is the same as f(g(x)).

Then you can use the chain rule as it appears in the book: [sin(5x)]' = [f(g(x))]' = f'(g(x))*g'(x) = cos(g(x))*5 = cos(5x)*5

This is how I normally approach the chain rule when I tutor in person.

Thank you so much for replying =)
as we speak i am posting up another question involving calculus lol
