Carlo = x. Lets say Sam=y. So Carlo = 2y, then x=2y and (Sam)y=x/2. Ann = Sam+681 = x/2 + 681. My answer is x/2 + 681 but my teachers say otherwise..Hi @yoo,

Once you can say how much Sam has (compared to Carlo and using "x" to do this), you can then consider how much Ann has compared to Sam.

I think it's a very good idea for beginning algebra students to assign symbols for abstract quantities — and then to form expressions and equations in their work — because it really helps to grow the neural webs involved with symbolic reasoning.there was really no need to introduce a "y"
