Cannot make sense of this for the life of me

So a friend of mine posted this long heart felt status for her sons 11th birthday. The post starts off saying "12 years ago I gave birth to..." and then proceeds to wish her son a happy 11th birthday. The child was born July 15th 2005, which would make him 11 as of yesterday. Can someone please explain how she figures she gave birth 12 years ago? She keeps saying "you start at zero" which I get...but 0-1 =1 year 0-2= 2 years and so on and so forth. She acknowledges her son is 11 but says she gave birth 12 years ago. I have never been great at math but this just seems ridiculous.

Perhaps your friend needs eleven fingers. ;)

2005 was eleven years ago because 2016 - 2005 = 11.

Anyone who gave birth in July 2005 did so eleven years ago.

The only way I can think of that this might make sense is if she was counting the date of conception... but I'd hardly call that "[giving] birth to."

Simple ... your friend is wrong!

I agree, it is 12. It is done by doing using the 'new math' that students are taught by ***** teachers. You know, the method that does not involve any thinking at all.
