can u help explain this problem please

Imagine the 12 foot board being divided into 3 equal parts. If there are 3 equal parts of the 12 foot board, how many feet are in each part? 4. There are 4 parts per each 3 sections (3X4=12). If you take away one section (4 feet), you are left with the two remaining sections. Each contain 4 feet so together they equal 8 feet. (4+4=8)

If 1/3 of a 12-foot board is sawed off, how much is left?

You have 1 WHOLE board. You saw off 1/3 of that board... so what part is left?

1 whole board - (1/3) of the board

1 whole board is 3/3 of the board (because 3/3 = 1)

(3/3) of the board - (1/3) of the board is (2/3) of the board.

(2/3) of 12 feet is (2/3)*12 feet
