Calculating surface area of 2 intersecting "cylinders"

I'm really struggling in trying to find an equation to describe this part it terms of surface area (material useage). Variables, as seen in the picture, are d1, d2, d3, and (a) angle. L1 is not a variable and neither is branch length, both can be calculated from the previous noted variables. Any help in figuring out an equation, or at minimum pointing me in the correct direction to get started would be much appreciated!

Side note-

Assume branch length, L1, and offset to be constants. However, if you like to know how to calculate those values, here they are:


L1 = ( d3 * ( 1 / sin a )) + 4

Branch Length = [({( tan a * 2.5 ) + ( d3 * 0.5 )} / tan a + (( d1 * 0.5 ) / sin a ))] - ((( d1 - d2 ) / 4 ) / sin a )

Offset = L1 - (((d1 / 8 )) / tan a + (L1 / 2))

I'm sorry, but I'm not understanding how this relates to calculus...? What topics have recently been covered in your calculus class? How do you think your instructor (or book) is intending that you apply that information?

Please be specific. Thank you! ;)
 
I believe this can be solved using either method of auxiliary spheres or method of auxiliary cylinders, both of which are parts of calculus. The reason for solving this is to determine the material used to produce this part. I am not currently in college anymore so there is no current topic being discussed.

This is complicated and tedious to calculate EXACTLY.

If you got to have exact solution, go to your town-university or town-college and get hold of a math professor. If you hire one of his students as intern - they will be help you out to calculate the exact solution.

Since you are not in college - why do you need an EXACT solution of this horrible problem?

Are you assuming a plane surface? You say Barrel Length and the Barrel suggests a cylinder to me.
 
Yes they are cylinders. I don't need an exact answer, approximate answer will do just fine.
