What is the mathmatical expression of "mean"?{Name} scores the following marks in 8 tests. His mean mark is 7.5 . Calculate the value of y
7, 8, 8, Y, 6, 9, 10, 5

As suggested above you need to find an expression for the mean. Basically, do whatever you would do to find the average or "mean" with those numbers (including Y) then just pick Y so that the mean is equal to 7.5.

Since this has been here for several days,
\(\displaystyle \frac{7+ 8+ 8+ Y+ 6+ 9+ 10+ 5}{8}= 7.5\)
\(\displaystyle \frac{53+ Y}{8}= 7.5\)
\(\displaystyle 53+ Y= 8(7.5)= 60\)
\(\displaystyle Y= 60- 53= 7\).
\(\displaystyle \frac{7+ 8+ 8+ Y+ 6+ 9+ 10+ 5}{8}= 7.5\)
\(\displaystyle \frac{53+ Y}{8}= 7.5\)
\(\displaystyle 53+ Y= 8(7.5)= 60\)
\(\displaystyle Y= 60- 53= 7\).
