Since it's kinda obvious that I'm not very good with Calculus (seeing as I am teaching myself) and my exam is on Saturday, I am going to ask everyone to write some topics that I could definately improve on. I know it's a lot, but I am allowed to take with me a small sheet of notes. Please let me know anything that could be helpful for this exam. I would GREATLY appreciate any help. Thank you everyone!

You need to take a step back and really understand the fundamentals of calculus. Its much easier if you actually understand what a derivitive is and what an integral is, how they are used and WHEN to use them. I always thought that was the hardest, but most important part of calculus- knowing when to use what!

Anyone can learn a section or a chapter and repeat the same kinds of problems over and over again, it very mechanical. Like teaching a dog tricks, very repeditive! The key is recognizing how to tackle each individual problem at random - the format of any final.

That being said, I would say that I'd write down any formulas you have needed, and trig identities, even if you have them memorized, its nice to know that they are there just in case you are unsure.

Good Luck!

Man, Calculus online is hard. I don't think I'll ever take an online math class again, well, maybe statistics. But, no more Calculus online!!

I can't imagine a worse course to take online! I took C Programming online, it was tough, I did the same as you have by registering on a programming help board and asking a million questions! I took it online to save time but in the end I think it took up more of my time.

I have taken several soc/hum courses online and had no problems, its pretty much ,read the material, and take tests, those are the kind of courses I recommend taking online.

Yeah, I am 17, I started college early. Thi is my first semester and I am taking 4 online classes. I am taking English121 (advanced enligsh), Soc11 (intro to sociology, Calc*something-or-other*(Calculus I), and CJS111 (Intro to criminal justice). The english class is what I was warned about taking online. The guy who signed me up for my classes said that the class was extremely difficult as it was, but online it was nearly impossible...my grade in the class is an A. lol. I hate sociology. I have such a bad grade in that class. I am probably going to have to take it over. I don't understand it AT ALL. I was hoping to take psychology instead. Oh well. Calc I had a B in until about half way through, when it started to get hard. Now I have a very low grade and am counting on my final to pass me. It was a very difficult class to take online and it had basically no interaction at all. Then is my CJS class. I loved it at first, but now there is a ridiculous amount of work to do in that class. I mean, a 10 page midterm and a 20 page final. I had to write huge papers about stuff that I don't understand, can anyone say BS? lol

Anyway, if anyone has any other tips, I would greatly appreciate them! Thanks!

Do you get to take your exams in the comfort of your own home, at least?

Yeah, fat chance, lol. Actually, I have to drive 2 hours to the campus and take a 2 hour long exam only to drive 2 hours home, lol. 6 hours for one stinking exam!

So do your professors just email you the assignments and deadlines and then it is up to you to complete them and learn all the material on your own or with forums like this one? :)

Exactly! That's why I did so bad in this class. English was a breeze, even though it was an advanced course and not recommended. Calc was extremely difficult online and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Lizzie,
May ask you how did an online calculus course work?
Wasn’t notation a real stumbling block?
How was that handled? Did you have to learn TeX?
Did you use a word processor?

Actually, what we did is he would make up worksheets (very difficult to read his handwriting) I suppose he used LaTex. Anyway, I printed them out, completed them on a seperate sheet of paper and either scanned it and sent the file or faxed it to him. You could also mail it, but I never did that. Then he'd post the answers and results after the due date and time. I did learn how to use LaTex, but only because it helps when I am writing on this forum. Basically, I either taught myself, or the tutors on here taught me my whole course. Obviously it was very difficult.

Also we had 3 performance opportunities where you would get a paper to do within 3 days. Those were the multiple choice ones. For those we just wrote an email like this:

1.A
2.B
3.A
4.D
5.B
6.C

and so on.

*Listens to the crickets and wonders where everyone went...*
