Hi mnacey. Most errors in Gaussian Elimination are simple arithmetic mistakes. I always double-check as I go. I also highly organize my scratch paper and avoid mental calculations.

In your second step, where you multiplied R1 by 5 and added the result to R2, there's an arithmetic mistake in the augmented column.

Not for a beginner!

I'd say, once beginning students honestly feel confident, use of technology to check homework answers going forward is smart.

Otherwise, they might be cheating themselves.
