I'm not a student, in fact I'm a grandmother, but am curious about a math statistic!

My youngest granchild was born at the exact same time (to the minute), as her mother (my daughter), on her mother's birthday. I wonder what the odds are of this happenning?? :D

Re: Birth probability

Hello, Sndluv!

My youngest granchild was born at the exact same time (to the minute)
as her mother (my daughter) on her mother's birthday.
I wonder what the odds are of this happenning?

There are 365 days in a year, 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour.
Hence, there are: \(\displaystyle \,365\,\times\,24,\,60\:=\:525,600\) minutes in a year.

Your daughter was born on one of those minutes.
The probability that your grandchild was born on the same minute is: \(\displaystyle \L\:\frac{1}{525,600}\)

Were they both Cesarean Section? It's much easier to control times that way. I don't recommend the procedure for that purpose, of course.

Soroban: Thanks for the info. That's how I thought it would be done, but wasn't sure!

tkhunny: No c-sections here! In fact - My daughter was natural birth in hospital 36 years ago. Her daughter was born at home, natural birth, with a midwife. She didn't even see a doctor . As natural as could be!
