Which of the following expressions represents the product of 3 less than twice x and 2 more than the quantity 3 times x ?
A. –6x2 + 25x + 6
B. 6x2 + 5x + 6
C. 6x2 – 5x + 6
D. 6x2 – 5x – 6
E. 6x2 – 13x – 6

okay it made since word wise but i dont get it
i wrote it as:

3(-x2)+2+3(x)
am i right so far?
then i multiplied 3 n 2
-6x2=2+3(x)
-6x2=5x
and thats where am lost what am i doing wrong

Giving the question, we know that 3 less than twice x is, (2x - 3)

We also know that 2 more than the quantity of 3 times x is, (3x + 2)

Taking the product of them we get (2x - 3) (3x + 2)

Using FOIL(first outside inside last) we get: 6x^2 + 4x - 9x - 6

By simplifying we get 6x^2 - 5x - 6.

Looking at the choices, this matches D.

The phrase "3 less than twice x" means that 3 is being subtracted away from 2x, not the other way around.

Note that I wrote "twice x" as 2x. We put the number in front of the variable, not after it.

Please correct these mistakes, and then try again.

Also, we do not need parentheses around the variable x. Put the parentheses around the entire factor, instead.

In other words, write (2 + 3x) instead of 2 + 3(x).

Thank you for showing your work. Let us know if you need more help with this exercise.

OKAY THATS A MILLION BUT HOW DID U SIMPLIFY TO GET THAT ANS I BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT SO I DID:
6X^2+4X-9X-6 AND I SUBTRACTED
4X-9X WONT THE ANSWER BE 5X^2 SEEING AS THO THERE ARE 2 X'S?

No. 4 - 9 = -5
4x - 9x = -5x ; that's it.
Same as 4apples - 9apples

No.

x^2 means multiplication. Specifically, x times x.

The terms 4x and 9x are not being multiplied in the expression 4x - 9x, so there is no way to get any x^2.

You have 4 x's. You subtract 9 x's away from the four.

4 minus 9 is negative 5.

I'll show it to you explicitly, by factoring.

4x - 9x

Factor out the x.

x(4 - 9)

Order of operations.

x(-5)

Rewrite using the Commutative Property of Multiplication.

-5x
