I am trying to figure out this problem.

-x + 12 = -4 + x

I'm sure it's basic, but I sometimes feel like I'm an algebra idiot. Thank you for your help!

Hello, paulac!

If you are solving for x\displaystyle x:

\(\displaystyle \L \;\,-\,x\,+\,12\,=\,-\,4\,+\,x\)

Add x\displaystyle x to both sides:\(\displaystyle \L \;12\,=\,-\,4\.+\,2x\)

Add 4\displaystyle 4 to both sides:\(\displaystyle \L \;16\,=\,2x\)

Now finish it up!
