1-1:2 looks like it could represent the mixed number "one and one-half".
I've seen it written as 1-1/2, but I think 1+1/2 is more clear.
So, if you're taking about the mixed number (1+1/2) multiplied by 2, there are different approaches.
One approach uses the distributive property. You'll need to get back to us, after you ask whether your friend has learned the distributive property.
Another approach changes the mixed number into an improper fraction, before mutiplying. Multiply the improper fraction by 2/1, using the rule for multiplying two fractions.
