arrange the fractions in ascending order or are these equivalent
4 5
15 16 << I guess this is \(\displaystyle \frac{4}{15}\, \mbox{and}\, \frac{5}{16}\)
There are a couple of approaches to determining which is larger. One would be to rewrite each fraction as an equivalent fraction having the same denominator as the other. I'll demonstrate.
Which is larger 5/8 or 7/12?
The least common denominator of 8 and 12 is 48.
Rewrite each fraction as an equivalent fraction with the denominator 48.
\(\displaystyle \frac{5}{8}=\frac{30}{48}\)
\(\displaystyle \frac{7}{12}=\frac{28}{48}\)
Your problem becomes --- Which is larger \(\displaystyle \frac{30}{48} \,\mbox{or}\, \frac{28}{48}\)? Just compare the numerators to determine.
