Perhaps a bit of an odd request but I need some help on a question. I need to work out how many standard drinks cans (with a diameter of 6.7 cm's) I can fit in a sports hall with measurements of 36m by 33.25m. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I need to see your effort to figure out - where do you need help.

First try this

How many circles of diameter 1" can yo fit in a rectangle of 9" x 6".

Remember you can stack circles in a triangular (hexagonal) pattern or square pattern. For a large number of circles (to fit in), it is more efficient to use triangular pattern.

Huh? Are you storing them only one level high?

That's how I'm reading it, Denis.

He wants to cover the floor with wall-to-wall cans (with each can standing upright).

It's odd, but not unheard of! I did the same thing once, using gallon paint cans on an empty bedroom floor. (I'm too embarrased to say why.)

Hi guys,

I'm just talking about packing them on one level. I had a look at the circle packing but i'm stuggling with all the equations! (I'm not very good at maths unfortunately). But the square packing of circles seems to correspond to my probelm. I just don't really know where to start with all those equations!

Thanks,

Owen

Did you try to do this problem? Do it without thinking about equations.

Same as in a rectangle of 6" x 9"
