The world population is expected to be

P(t)=0.00074t^3 - 0.0704t^2 + 0.89t + 6.04

in year t, hwere t is measures in decades with t=0 corresponding to 2000 and P(t) measured in billions.

a. Show that the world popultaion is forecast to peak around 2071. ( Hint use the quadratic formula)

b. What will the population peak at?

Find the derivative of your function. Set it to 0 and solve for t. It will be a quadratic so use the formula.

You will get two answers. Only one will be make sense.

Remember, your answer will have to be multiplied by 10 and added to 2000.

Then plug that back into the original function to find the population then.

Thank you for the reply. I found the derivative of the function and set it to zero andsolved x. Then I chose an arbitrary number, one from each side of the interval and then wasn;t sure of the next step. Can I ask other questions for future reference? Thank you :D

No user is limited to one post, or some other fixed number of queries. Just post new questions as new threads, in consideration of what you read in the "Read Before Posting" thread.

We look forward to your contributions to FreeMathHelp! :D
