Hi all,

I am planning on beginning an independent study of mathematics from the simplest arithmetic to the highest level my mind is capable of understanding. I would like to get a solid theoretical foundation, not just learning the "how", but the "why" as well.

Does anyone know of any math books that fit this description, a book that can deliver a "big picture" understanding of mathematics, that can lay a solid foundation for mathematical study?

Thanks!

My opinion: No single book can do that for you

If you want "solid theoretical foundation", you will need to study many books.

What is your math-activity background? Have you been out of school for awhile?

Math Foundations

If you want "solid theoretical foundation"
There's a very fascinating set of videos by a research mathematician
His Playlists
include several series of videos, each series is a course, each video is a class.
I can recommend...
"MathFoundations" and "MathHistory"

If your needs are more elementary, an excellent site for math practice is ...
Khan Accademy

These recommendations are FREE and in Video format ...
Like college courses that allow you to stop the professor, back up, and repeat as many times as you like.
You will never be late to class, and the professor is always available and waiting for you :)

You have the advantage that you can post the URL of the video that you are currently watching, and the minutes indicator of the place in the video that you want us to see.

This sounds like a great project, I did a similar thing when I was in the Army for 2 years (drafted during Viet Nam war)
