I am not sure what the five steps are in your text book. I'm sure every book is a little different but why dont you follow these "five steps? "

What are you having a hard time with?

I would assume step one is to write down what you know and what you need to know.

Then define some variables. Let \(\displaystyle s=students \) who do not work full time. Then it follows that \(\displaystyle 7s\) are the students who do work full time.

Now, what is our constraint? 11,600.

Can you finish this bad boy off?

Thats the part that confuses me getting it started and trying to break it down to get the answer.

Ok , well:

The total students at the University is 11,600.

So this must be our constraint. We can't go higher or lower then this number.

Now,let s equal the students who are not working full time.

Since, there are 7 times the students working full time then there is students who do not, we can represent this as 7s. Meaning, if we take all the students who do not work full time (s) and multiply this by 7 (7s) we get the number of students working full time.

So now we have this equation:

s+7s=11,600

Because we know the total number of students must equal 11,600.

So solving for s we have:

8s=11,600
s=1450

So this tells us that there are 1,450 students who do not work full time and 7*1450 = 10,150 students who do.

As a check we can test:
1,450 + 10,150 = 11,600

We are all good!

Application in terms of Linear Equations

Full-time student employees = 7x

Let x = students who do not work full-time

7x + x = 11,600

8x = 11,600

x = 11,600/8

x = 1450

There are 1450 students that donot work full-time.

Then 7 times 1450 = 10,150 students working full-time.
