Among 9 presidential candidates at a date, 3 are republicans and 6 are democrats

how many lineups by party are possible if each candidate is labeled either R or D?

I don't understand what the question is asking. Could someone explain it to me?

I believe it is asking for the number of distinct ways one can arrange 3 R's and 6 D's next to one another.

Hello, sunny1324!

I agree with daon . . .

In how many ways can three R's and six D's be arranged in a row?

\(\displaystyle \text{Answer: }\:{9\choose3,6} \:=\:\frac{9!}{6!3!} \:=\:84\text{ lineups.}\)
