In addition, “pronumeral” is a useful word. It means “in place of a numeral” and is completely analogous to “pronoun.” Moreover, it allows a distinction between unknowns and variables by being an umbrella term.

In the past, I've had the impression that "pronumeral" was primarily an Australian usage; this confirms it.

I understand it to be parallel to "pronoun" (a general word that stands in for a specific word).

Commonly used in Australia. Pronumeral is to a numeral as pronoun is to a noun.
