Altitude Question

We just started learning about altitudes, and I am having problems constructing them. My teacher is extremely picky, and I don't know how to construct or draw a relitively exact altitude without just guessing where the right angle is. So, how do you draw a right angle from the vertex to the opposite side? If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
