Does putting like that help?

\(\displaystyle \displaystyle \frac{5x^3y^2+xy^4}{xy} = \frac{5x^3y^2}{xy}+\frac{xy^4}{xy}\)

need help with this problem:

divide 5x^3y^2+xy^4 by xy

Hi Traci,

You could factor out an xy in the numerator like this and then simplify:

\(\displaystyle \frac{5x^3y^2+xy^4}{xy}=\frac{xy(5x^2y+y^3)}{xy}\)
