You ARE following the rules for the order of operations, I hope....
Do any operations inside grouping symbols first
THEN, do any powers (exponents)
THEN, do multiplications and/or divisions in order, from left to right.
FINALLY, do additions and/or subtractions in order, from left to right.
Mathematicians have agreed to follow this order of operations so that the same set of symbols will produce the same result each time.
