Format exponents in text by using the carat key, so, for instance, "three squared equals nine" is written as "3^2 = 9".

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what this means.

Though here on freemathhelp.com, you can embed html into your posts. Simply place any exponents you would like to type in between the sup tags:

Code:
32 = 9
32 = 9

algebra.

thanks!!!

ok then.

How do I factor out the following expression?

:?: :!: :?:
Heres the problem:

1.) 9x2- 3x-20 ?

and then how would i factor out:

2.) 16x2+ 24x+9 ?

:idea: the answers are supposed to be:

1.) (3x+4)(3x-5)
2.) (4x+3)2]

Please post new questions as new threads, not as replies to old questions. Thank you.

1) Factor 9x2 - 3x - 20

Multiply 9 and -20. Find factors of the product that add to -3. Use these numbers to split "-3x" into two terms. Then factor in pairs.

For instance:

Factor 8x2 + 14x - 9

(8)(-9) = -72

factor pairs:

1, 72
2, 36
3, 24
4, 18
6, 12
8, 9

multiplying to a negative: factors have opposite signs

adding to +14: factors are 14 apart, with the larger one getting the "+"

use -4 and +18

8x2 - 4x + 18x - 9

4x(2x - 1) + 9(2x - 1)

(2x - 1)(4x + 9)
Follow this procedure with your example.

2) Factor 16x2 + 24x + 9

Follow the above procedure, or, noting that 16 and 9 are squares, check to see if this fits the pattern of a perfect-square trinomial.
