Though here on freemathhelp.com, you can embed html into your posts. Simply place any exponents you would like to type in between the sup tags:

3<sup>2</sup> = 9

3² = 9

Another one that I like to use is

alt + 0178 for ²

and

alt + 0179 for ³

How do I factor out the following expression?

Heres the problem:

1.) 9x²- 3x-20 ?

and then how would i factor out:

2.) 16x²+ 24x+9 ?

:idea: the answers are supposed to be:

1.) (3x+4)(3x-5)

1) Factor 9x² - 3x - 20

Multiply 9 and -20. Find factors of the product that add to -3. Use these numbers to split "-3x" into two terms. Then factor in pairs.

For instance:

Factor 8x² + 14x - 9

(8)(-9) = -72

factor pairs:

1, 72
2, 36
3, 24
4, 18
6, 12
8, 9

multiplying to a negative: factors have opposite signs

adding to +14: factors are 14 apart, with the larger one getting the "+"

use -4 and +18

8x² - 4x + 18x - 9

4x(2x - 1) + 9(2x - 1)

(2x - 1)(4x + 9)

Follow this procedure with your example.

2) Factor 16x² + 24x + 9

Follow the above procedure, or, noting that 16 and 9 are squares, check to see if this fits the pattern of a perfect-square trinomial.
