I'm also having trouble with word problems, can someone guide me through the steps on how to solve this problem.
Cody who lives north of Robert would like to go and meet him ASAP. Cody drove south on Interstate 95 at 64m.p.h. Robert drove north on the same freeway at 50 m.p.h.. If they are 282 miles apart from each other at 10:29 at what time will they meet.
I've tried to solve this problem and got a solution but I think the process that im doing is wrong.
Thank-You
Since you are looking for an answer involving time, you might want to let
x = number of hours that each person travels.
Cody's rate is 64 mph, and he travels for x hours. So how far does Cody go? Remember that distance = rate * time. If Cody travels at 64 miles per hour for x hours, then Cody's distance = 64 mph * x hours, or 64x miles.
Robert's rate is 50 mph. Robert also travels for x hours. So, the distance that Robert travels is 50 mph * x hours, or 50x miles.
Robert and Cody are traveling TOWARDS each other. They start 282 miles apart; when they meet, they will have covered a total of 282 miles.
Cody's distance + Robert's distance = 282 miles
64x + 50x = 282
You can solve that for x, which will be the number of hours that each person has traveled. Since they each left at 10:29 a.m., they'll meet x hours later...
