I was wondering if someone could help me with the following problem. I would realy appreciate it.

According to the U.S. Census, the population of the state of Arkansas during the year 2000 was 2.673 x 10 to the 6th . The total population of the U.S during the year 2000 was 2.814 x 10 to the 8th.

1. Determin the precent of the U.S. population that lived in Arkansas in 2000. Show or explain all of your work even if you use mental math or a calclulator. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth of a precent.

2. The land area of Arkansas is 52,068 square miles. Detemine the number of people per square miles in Arkansas for the year 2000. Write your answer in scientific notation.

The percent is
number in Ark/Total number * 100
(2.673*10^6) /(2.814 * 10^8) *10^2 =
(2.673*10^8)/(2.814*10^8) =
2.673/2.814

2. (2.673*10^6)/(5.2068*10^4) =
(2.673/5.2068)*10^2 =
267.3/5.2068

Thank you so much that helped alot. I understand now how to do the problem. I might post back on this topic with one more question if I cant get the chance to get some help from the teacher tommorow. Once agian thank you for using your spare time to help me :D .

Boy, sean, we're sure not used to "nice polite" students like you

Thanks. Well I have one last problem if its not a big bother. I unfourtantly didnt have time to get help today so here is the last problem on my worksheet that I need help with.

The Amazing Museum has a butterfly house of 1,200 butterflies. There are 3 types of butterflies, Swallowtail, Monarch, and Lacey, in a ratio of 5:3:2.

1. The museum staff members randomly catch a butterfly, mesure its wing span and then let it go. Determine the probability that the first butterfly they catch is a swallowtail butterfly. Show or explain all of your work even if you use mental math or a calculator.

2. Using the ratio above, determine the number of each type of butterfly in the butterfly house. Show or explain all work.

3. Each week for 5 weeks the museum adds 20 swallowtail, 96 Monarchs, and 64 Laceys to the butterfly house. Determine the new ratio in lowest terms of butterflies in the house after 5 weeks. Show or explain all work.

Thanks

Thanks

1) the ratio of swallowtails to monarchs to lacey's is 5:3:2.
So, out of (5 + 3 + 2) or 10 butterflies, 5 are swallowtails, 3 are monarchs, and 2 are laceys. That would give a ratio of 5:3:2, and the total would be 10.

The probability of a caught butterfly being a swallowtail would be 5/10, or 1/2.

2) 5/10 of the butterflies are swallowtails. 3/10 are monarchs, and 2/10 are laceys. You should be able to find the number of each type if the total in the museum is 1200....
for example, 5/10*(1200) would give the number of swallowtails.

3) You can find the number of each type of butterfly when the population is 1200 (see above).

Then, in x weeks, the number of swallowtails will be
number of swallowtails now + 20x

And in x weeks, the number of monarchs will be
number of monarchs now + 96x

And in x weeks, the number of laceys will be
number of laceys now + 64x

You should be able to fnd the ratio
swallowtails : monarchs : laceys

I hope this helps you.

Once agian thanks for the help, and that helped me get it. Wish I had found this site sooner.

Thanks :)
