: Suppose that a chemist is mixing two acid solutions...one of 30% concentration and the other of 50% concentration. Which of the following concentrations is not possible as a resulting mixture? A)40% B)45% C)35% D)25%.

HINT: putting a bit of the 50% in the 30% does what to the 30% ? Do some thinking, Rock...

I thought and I thought until I couldn't think anymore. I didn't see any variables to solve the problem with....so that's what brought me here. As an answer to your question...Logically speaking it would seem to me if you diluted the 30% solution you would have a weaker solution. So I know that 45 is ok...I figured that much out. So if the weaker solution is 25% well then the answer is not 25% or 45% because those both work as answers. That leaves either 35% as the answer or 40%....Am I correct in my thinking? If you could help with setting up the problem....I'm sure I could solve it. I just don't know where to begin.

It would seem to me that, since a 50% solution is MORE concentrated than a 30% solution, mixing a 50% solution with a 30% solution would have to raise the concentration from 30%, and lower the concentration from 50%....... In other words, a mixture of 30% solution with 50% solution should result in a mixture that's somewhere between 30% and 50% concentration.

Does that help?

Thanks for the info....I think I can figure it out. What you said does make sense. I was looking for a formula to solve this problem
but maybe everything is not solved via formulas. Maybe sometimes we must look at things logically to determine the answer. Unfortuntely, I am artistically
inclined and problem solving does not come natural to me. What is it they say, Right brain, left brain...one or the other but seldom both...lol.
