Five years ago, John’s age was half of the age he will be in 8 years. Set up the equation(s) that lead to the answer. DO NOT solve.

Solution:

Let x = John's age

x - 5 = (1/2)(x + 8)

Is this right?

I would suggest a more clear definition.

x = John's age TODAY.
 
Yes, I do agree with x=John's age now
There is no need to ask us if you are correct. You can solve for x and see if it lives up to what you are given.
Forums like this are good but students (and of course you are a student!) need not to depend on it too much.
I am NOT saying that you are but just suggesting that you be careful.
Learning comes from hard work with no short cuts.
