Hi all,

I'm stuck on this question, I cannot figure out what x is, can you please help me?

Hi Nav. I'm thinking that the exercise statement contains a mistake.

I can solve three of the equations for the same x,y values if I change 392 to 440.

I can solve also (for yet a different exercise) if I change x/y to 55/8.

?

After making the change as suggested above (response #2):

Calculate 'x' and 'y' from the first two conditions. Then,
Calculate 'x*y' & 'x/y' for further solution.

Ah, I think Dr. Peterson found the true error.

PS: The corrected exercise will work with -49, too.

?

Thank you all. I'm shocked the school handed out a question with an error in it.

To make it absolutely clear, here are the four equations as given, no three of which meet:

Here it is with my 49:

Here it is with Otis's 440:

So both are equally reasonable corrections. Or, we could also have changed the last 63 to 8:

That may well be what was intended, as now they are all close, and it's a more likely error. (7 would do the same thing.)
