Hello, mikegipe!

Did you make a sketch?

A piece of wire 42 cm long is bent into the shape of a rectangle
whose width is twice its length. .Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
Code:
          x
      * - - - *

   2x |       | 2x

      * - - - *
          x

Let the length be \(\displaystyle x.\)
Then the width is \(\displaystyle 2x.\)

The perimeter is: \(\displaystyle \:x\,+\,2x\,+\,x\,+\,2x\:=\:6x\)

There are 42 cm of wire: \(\displaystyle \:6x\,=\,42\)

Can you finish it now?

Practice

I'm practicing for a test by going over some of the posting. Is this the answer for this one.
x

2x 2x

x

Let the length be
Then the width is

The perimeter is: x + x + 2x + 2x = 42cm

Solve for x:

6x = 42

x= 42 ÷ 6

x= 7

length = 7cm
width = 14cm
