you estimate the slope of a tangent line with the slope of a secant line.

a good estimate would be the secant line w/ endpoints symmetrical to the point of interest

\(\displaystyle \L f'(4.3) \approx \frac{f(4.9) - f(3.7)}{4.9 - 3.7}\)
