two past summers ago, marshall trapped 20 puffins, then tagged and released them. This past summer he trapped 50 puffins and found that 2 of them were taggd.

a. using marshalls findings, estimate the number of puffins on the island. explain how you mad your estimate.

b. how confident are you that your estimate is accurate? explain your answer.

i asked my sister to help me carry out the prob. and she didnt understand it ( shes a a+ student, going to a magnificent college).

i think that b. is a kind of weird question too

i would apreesheat it if sumone wood explain to me how to do it :D :!: :D

thanks,
Tupac

If the preceding is meant to read "explain how you made your estimate", then you would use ratios and proportions. If it means something else, please clarify, using standard English. Thank you.

I would suspect that this is asking you to evaluate the error range, using whatever methods you have covered recently in your statistics class.

I'm sorry, but I am not clear on what this means...?

When you reply, please include the topic(s) recently covered in class, any formulae you feel might be appropriate, and all the steps and reasoning you have attempted thus far.

Thank you.

You can use a proportion to answer part (a).

Let x = number of puffins on the island

Then,
Code:
number of puffins tagged number in sample with tags
-------------------------- = -----------------------------------
total # of puffins on island number of puffins in sample

We know there were 20 puffins that received tags. We know that the number of puffins in the sample was 50, and that 2 of those had tags. So,

  20 2
----- = -----
   x 50

Now, I assume you can solve that proportion.

For part (b), if you are in 7th grade, then you probably haven't studied much detailed statistics. However, would you be willing to bet your life that you've found the actual number of puffins on the island? Or, do you feel that this is a "pretty good" estimate? Or, do you have no confidence in the answer at all? One thing you might want to consider is the fact that 2 years passed between the original tagging and Marshall's later sample....might this affect the number of tagged puffins which are still around? I'm sure your textbook has some relevant information that would help you answer this part of the question.
