Sandy is building a model of a square pyramid for a class project. The side length of the square base is 18 inches and the slant height of the pyramid is 17 inches. What is the surface area of the model pyramid?

The surface area of the "square" pyramid consists of 4 isosceles triangles.

What is the surface area of one of those triangles ?

Assuming that you don't include the base area into the surface area - add those areas of the triangles - and you have it.
