My son is in the 5th grade and has come in with a "project" of using a hanger and yarn and making a "Polygon (All Flat Sides)"
Has anyone ever heard of this...I'm not that old..but the teacher didn't send any instructions (which I'm sure she told them in class..but still..a paper would help)

Thanks for any help

You have no instructions at all? Sheesh! :shock:

I have no idea how you're supposed to figure out what to do. I mean, with a hanger and string, one could do so many...

...ya know, if your fifth-grader is anything like my fifth-grader, you probably shouldn't leave him alone with the hanger and the string for too long.... :wink:

Good luck!

true...that's why i've stepped in....its a dangerous task.. :twisted:

lol, what i would do is, if time permits, ask the teacher for instructions or a better explanation.

I put my brain into artsy-craftsy mode . . .

Think of a coathanger as a wide isosceles trapezoid.
Code:
                       |
            * _ _ _ _ / \ _ _ _ _ *
          /                        \
        /                            \
      * _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *
On top it has a "left shoulder" and a "right shoulder"; on the bottom is the "bar".

Suppose we tie our string to the left shoulder
. . then run the string down to the bar and tie it there
. . then run the string up to the right shoulder and tie it
. . then run the string back to the starting point and tie it.

Not very exciting . . . but we have a triangle.

. . Could that be what the teacher intended?
