Hi BigRob:

Your statement implies to me that you once knew how to solve this problem.

Since you did not tell us WHAT KIND of help you need, I have to GUESS.

So, I have guessed that a sample is all that you need. Here it is:

17x = -3x + 44

I want to combine all of the terms that contain the variable x. I recognize that I can do this by either subtracting 17x from both sides OR by adding 3x to both sides. I choose to add 3x to both sides.

17x + 3x = 3x - 3x + 44

Now I combine like terms to simplify this new equation.

20x = 44

I want to get the variable x all by itself on one side of the equal sign. This is what it means to SOLVE the equation.

I recognize that I can do this by dividing both sides by 20.

20x/20 = 44/20

Both sides of this new equation can be simplified because both fractions reduce.

x = 11/5

If you need more help with YOUR equation, then please post SPECIFIC questions so that we know WHAT KIND of help you need.

Cheers,

~ Mark
