4220+0.25(x-30,650)
2006 federal income tax for a single person with a taxable income of x dollars, where x is over $30,650 but not over $74,200.
a.) simplify the expression
b.) find the amount of tax for a single tax payer with taxable income of $40,000

Anyone have any ideas?

Order of operations ...

Hi K:

Use the distributive property to get rid of the parentheses.

Then combine the constants.

For part (b), they gave you a value for the taxable income x. Make the substitution, and do the arithmetic.

Cheers,

~ Mark :)
