I have shared the complete question and just to confirm this is not my homework or school assignment. I was going through some past paper questions with my 10 year old son and came across this question. I really don't know where to start with it!? Hence the request for help.. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance, best regards, Jason.

If you add (1) and (2) together, you get:

7 packets of cookies and 7 boxes of eggs cost £22.94

1 packet of cookies and 1 box of eggs cost £(22.94/7)

2 packets of cookies and 2 boxes of eggs cost £(22.94/7 * 2)

3 packets of cookies and 4 boxes of eggs cost £11.22.
4 packets of cookies and 3 boxes of eggs cost £11.72.

Since you posted this to "Arithmetic", I'll assume that you don't know anything about algebra, so you can't set up a system of linear equations. Instead:

What would be the cost of 12 packs of cookies and 16 boxes of eggs? (Hint: Multiply the first relation by 4.)

What would be the cost of 12 packs of cookies and 9 boxes of eggs? (Hint: Multiply the second relation by 3.)

What then would be the cost of 7 boxes of eggs? (Hint: Subtract.)

What then would be the cost of 1 box of eggs? (Hint: Divide.)

What then would be the cost of 4 boxes of eggs? (Hint: Multiply.)

What then would be the cost of 3 packs of cookies? (Hint: Subtract from the first relation.)

What then would be the cost of 1 pack of cookies? (Hint: Divide.)

What then would be the cost of 1 pack of cookies and 1 box of eggs? (Hint: Add.)

What then would be the cost of 2 packs of cookies and 2 boxes of eggs? (Hint: Multiply.)

;)
