Follow the order of operations convention. Do the arithmetic inside the parenthesis first. Then do the multiplication implied by the parenthesis. This will lead you to an equation with a whole number on the left side and 3x on the right side. This equation is asking "Three times what number equals the whole number that you got when you did the arithmetic on the left side." In other words, solve for x.

Or, divide each side by 3:

\(\displaystyle \frac{(3^2)(8^2)}{3} \ = \ \frac{3x}{3}\)

\(\displaystyle 3(64) \ = \ x\)

\(\displaystyle 192 \ = \ x\)
