Math Glossary: s

Scalene Triangle A triangle with no congruent sides.
Scientific Notation A way of writing large numbers as powers of ten. 560000 = 5.6 x 10^5
Segment A line with two endpoints.
Set A collection of items.
Solid Geometry The area of geometry that involves 3d objects.
Space The 3d area which contains everything, like a plane does for 2d geometry.
Sphere A three-dimensional object in which all points are equidistant from the center (a ball shape).
Square A rectangle with four equal sides.
Square Root A number that can be multiplied by itself to get the original number. 2 is the square root of 4, because 2 x 2 = 4.
Straight Angle An angle with a measure of 180 degrees, appears like a line.
Subset A small set contained in a larger set.
Subtraction The operation that finds the difference between two numbers.
Sum The result after addition. Four is the sum of two plus two.
Superset A larger set containing smaller sets.
Supplementary Angle Either of two angles that produce 180 degrees when added.
Slope The steepness of a line. It is the change in y divided by the change in x, which basically tells you how much the line goes up for every amount it goes over. The slope of a line is constant over that whole line, but the slope of a curve is constantly changing. You must take the derivative of a curve to find its exact slope at a point of interest.
